What’s New in McAllen This Fall: Openings and Hot Spots

If you already live in McAllen, you probably don't need another list of restaurants to try. What you need is a read on where the city is putting its energy this quarter, because the openings and the calendar are not spread evenly. They are stacking up in two very specific places, and the timing is tighter than it looks.

Here is the thesis, up front. McAllen's fall 2026 is a north-side story. Almost every notable opening this season is landing along the N. 10th corridor or inside a shopping center within a two-mile radius of it, and the fall event calendar is anchored by a single weekend at the Convention Center. If you plan around those two facts, you will spend a lot less time in traffic and a lot more time actually enjoying what is new.

The corridor that is doing most of the work

Start with the retail and restaurant map. A new Wendy's is under construction in North McAllen, with work starting May 9, 2026. Wing Snob is building out a location at Central Marketplace with an opening window around November 2026, and POP MART is opening its first McAllen boutique at La Plaza with a roughly $450,000 interior renovation and an October target. Bath & Body Works is also opening a new McAllen store with a $250,000 investment and an October window at Parke at Nolana.

Farther up N. 10th, GEN Korean BBQ opened its 13th Texas location at The District, Building A, 7913 N 10th St, running 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM Monday through Thursday and until 11:00 PM Friday through Sunday. Then the anchor everyone has been waiting on: Nordstrom Rack construction is underway at Las Tiendas Shopping Center with a December completion date, marking the first Nordstrom Rack in the Rio Grande Valley.

Here is what that looks like when you line it up by month and address.

The pattern is not subtle. With the exception of Lin's second location, everything on that list sits north of Nolana or clusters around La Plaza and its satellite centers. That matters if you live in the older neighborhoods south of Highway 83 or in Sharyland: your Saturday errand loop is about to lengthen, and the shortcut through 10th is going to get slower every weekend from October through the holidays.

The one weekend that will define fall

Now the calendar. If you only remember one date this fall, make it the first weekend of October, because the Convention Center and the Performing Arts Center are hosting three major events inside 72 hours of each other.

South Texas Comic Con's Anime Fiesta runs October 3 through 5 at the McAllen Convention Center, and it is one of the largest fan events in the region. On the same Saturday night, the Juanes North America Tour 2026 plays MPAC on 10/3/26 at 8:00 PM. Two weeks later, Mariachazo brings Mariachi Vargas de Tecatitlan and Nuevo Tecatitlan Mariachi to MPAC on 10/17/26 at 8:00 PM.

The Convention Center and MPAC share the same access roads off Convention Center Boulevard. If you have kids going to Anime Fiesta and adults going to Juanes on the same night, the drop-off logistics get real. South Texas Comic Con's own guidance is to use rideshare directly to the McAllen Convention Center or arrive early, because parking fills quickly during peak hours. That advice applies double when a sold-out Latin concert next door is loading in at the same time.

If you are picking one weekend this fall to leave the car at home and split into two groups, October 3 is that weekend.

The rest of the fall lineup at MPAC is heavy on Latin and comedy programming. Alicia Villarreal's Bendita Locura Tour 2026 plays October 9, Dante Gebel's World Tour Despedida 2026 lands October 21, Gaby Mendoza plays October 24, Banda Corona Del Rey is on November 13, José Madero's USA Tour 2026 is November 14, and Jim Gaffigan brings Everything is Wonderful! on November 16. That is a booking cadence a lot of larger Texas cities would envy, and it is worth checking MPAC's schedule before you assume you have to drive to San Antonio for a show.

The food openings worth timing

Not every new restaurant is worth planning your week around, but a few of these earn a spot on the short list.

Lin's Grand Buffet's second McAllen location deserves attention for a specific reason. Lin's is opening a second McAllen restaurant in the next couple of months, and the chain with 17 nationwide locations originated in McAllen in 2002. The new buffet at 4201 W. Expressway 83 will serve Lin's staple wide selection of Chinese, Japanese and seafood items, along with a sushi bar, a Mongolian grill and live cooking stations with freshly prepared steaks. This is one of the rare cases where a "second location" is actually a homecoming for a brand that started here, and the Expressway 83 address puts it on the south-of-83 side of town that most of the other fall openings are ignoring.

GEN Korean BBQ is already open at The District and worth trying on a weeknight before word fully spreads. GEN was founded in 2011 by two Korean immigrants in Los Angeles, and the concept puts an embedded grill at the center of each table so guests cook their own meats. The 11 AM opening on weekdays makes it a viable lunch option, which is unusual for the format.

For Sonoran steakhouse territory, Palominos opened at 4117 W. Expressway 83 as the first U.S. location for a restaurant that has been a Sonora staple since 1974. Palominos was founded on traditional Sonoran Carne Asada and more than 50 years of grilled-meat expertise. If you have been to the Hermosillo location, this is the same kitchen tradition, adapted for a McAllen dining room.

Wing Snob at Central Marketplace is the November wildcard. The buildout is running roughly $312,809 and the opening is targeted for November 2026. Watch the Central Marketplace signage in late October if you want to be there in the first week.

What the openings tell you about the market

Zoom out for a moment. Six specific retail and restaurant investments landing in one quarter, all within a compact geography, is not random. It reflects a bet on the north-side commercial belt as the RGV's regional shopping destination, and the Nordstrom Rack decision is the tell. Nordstrom Rack is opening its first-ever RGV store at Las Tiendas, and national off-price retailers do not pick markets on a whim. They pick them on trade-area data.

For anyone thinking about McAllen from a longer horizon, the practical read is that the corridor between La Plaza Mall, The District, and Parke at Nolana is being reinforced as the retail spine of the city for at least the next several years. That has real implications for commute patterns, weekend traffic, and which parts of town gain foot traffic and which do not. Farther out on Nolana, a Nolana Avenue expansion is planned to improve traffic and safety, which suggests the city is already reading the same map.

A short fall plan, in order

If you want to compress all of the above into an actual to-do list:

1. Book MPAC tickets for whichever fall show you actually want before the October 3 weekend sells the venue's parking to Anime Fiesta traffic.
2. Try GEN Korean BBQ on a weeknight in August or September, before the December Nordstrom Rack crowd starts pulling every reservation in the N. 10th corridor.
3. Put Lin's Grand Buffet's Expressway 83 opening on your radar for a family Sunday once the doors open.
4. For the October 3–5 weekend, decide early whether you are an Anime Fiesta household or a Juanes household. Doing both is possible, but only with rideshare.
5. If Nordstrom Rack matters to you, plan the first visit for a weekday morning in December, not the opening Saturday.

Fall in McAllen used to be a slow season for openings. That is no longer true, and this year it is concentrated enough that a little planning goes a long way.
